Atlas Pendant

This chunky Atlas Pendant is a reminder of our strength and endurance. It’s a wearable sculpture of a nakey man holding a big juicy reclaimed gemstone.

In Greek mythology, the Titan Atlas led an uprising against Zeus - the king of the gods. He was defeated and then condemned to hold the celestial sphere above his head for eternity. Atlas was a big strong lad and he held the heavens upon his shoulders. He therefore personifies endurance and strength. Atlas was regarded as the guardian of the pillars of the sky and mythologies say he instructed humankind in the art of astronomy.

Details:

  • A large brass pendant featuring a red carnelian agate, which was reclaimed from an antique string of Scottish carnelian agates beads, that I bought in a charity shop in Frome (Somerset) in 2018.

  • Please note that these semi-precious gemstones will vary a little as they’re cut & polished from organic material. Some of the stones are striped and some are not - but they’re a delicious glossy deep orange red.

  • I hand-carved this Atlas Pendant from jewellers wax and had it cast into raw brass.

  • The chunky pendant measures about 3.5cm by 2cm and weighs about 11-13 grams (depending on the gemstone!).

  • The bale (loop) is about 5mm wide. I’d suggest suspending this piece from a heavier chain.

  • Add a chunky vintage raw brass belcher chain for an additional £30. Choose from 16 - 24 inches.

  • Choose to have Atlas plated in a thick layer of Fairmined Gold for an additional £50.

Please allow me 5-10 working days for me to finish, package & send your Atlas order.

Fairmined Gold plating will take up to 3 additional weeks.

BRASS CARE:

  • Brass is a great alternative to solid gold as it’s a golden yellow metal that will always buff back to being gold coloured.

  • It can oxidise over time from wear, cosmetics, chemicals, and exposure to water. This oxidisation (darkness) can be polished away with the small white polishing pad inside your order. This pad is quite abrasive & is only meant for your brass or bronze.

  • It is a base metal, and whilst most people get on very well with brass jewellery, a few people don’t get on with it as well.

  • People with skin which has a more acidic pH (lower number) can react to brass. The copper in the alloy can oxidise and create a temporary greenish hue on the skin. This is a harmless, natural chemical reaction between skin oils, sweat, and the metal, and it is not a sign of low-quality jewellery. Some people find this more common with rings because hands get washed and wet more often.

  • I’d advise you not to wear this pendant in water. Some gemstones are softer minerals and they don’t like getting wet. If it does get wet, dry it off before storing it.
